We’re sure you’ve often wondered why Bed

We’re sure you’ve often wondered why Bed, Bath, and Beyond can sell eReaders pa3535u-1brs and CVS can sell netbooks, but your favorite discount department store can’t sell iPads. Wonder no longer, because TJ Maxx has just started selling PA3534U-1BRS the 16GB Wi-Fi only iPad at some of its retail stores for the amazing low price of just $399.

An Engadget reader snapped a few pictures of iPads sitting next to the discount clothing rack at a Mount Vernon TJ Maxx and sony vgp-bps13/q battery the site called several other Maxx outlets that also said they are stocking the device or will have it available by Black Friday. It is not Sony VGP-BPS13 battery available online.

What’s interesting is that the $399 price point is Sony VGP-BPS13A/B Battery $100 lower than you’ll find anywhere else. So anyone who wants the entry-level iPad for the holiday season should try their local TJ Maxx stores before Sony VGP-BPS9 Battery anyplace else

At the moment he unveiled the iPad last winter, Steve Jobs sparked a tablet gold rush. Just as with the Netbook Goldrush Sony VGP-BPS10 Battery of 2007-8, small unknown players are rushing into the fray much faster than their well-heeled counterparts. Over the past few months, we’ve seen the Sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery puny prospectors Augen, CherryPal, CTL, and Netbook Navigator roll their wagons westward while huge PC players like Acer, Sony VGP-BPS9/S Battery ASUS, Sony and Lenovo sit quietly on the sidelines and the likes of HP and Toshiba stick their toes in the water by quietly releasing limited-edition slates.

What have these large companies learned by watching the intrepid 2010-ers mine for ore?

•Using a cut-rate resistive touchscreen is harder than digging through solid quartz with your fingernails. If you want consumers to run away Sony VGP-BPS9A/B Battery screaming, force them to pound with all their might on the display just to type a single letter. After they develop repetitive stress hp compaq 6510b battery injury from pushing against the hard surface and hearing damage from the squeaking noise the plastic makes, they’ll be sure to hp compaq 6710b battery recommend your product.•If you don’t have apps, you’re selling fool’s gold. Even though iPad users spend a plurality of their time browsing the web, 85 percent of them have installed 10 or more apps. Users want the ability to customize their tablet experiences hp compaq 6715b battery and they shouldn’t be forced to sideload or hack their devices to get what they want. With its Nvidia Tegra 2 chip, capacitive display, and hp compaq 6715s battery front-facing camera, the Viewsonic G Tablet sounds good on paper, but Android Market is not supported. If you’re selling an Android hp compaq 6720s battery device that has no marketplace, you might as well get in the stage coach and head back East.

•Stock Windows isn’t ready. Unless you have digits the size of toothpicks, the Windows 7 user interface simply doesn’t work for finger input. The icons hp compaq nx7300 battery and widgets are just too small, and the concept of having multiple windows on the screen at once isn’t relevant on a slate. Innovators like hp compaq nx6125 battery ExoPC have shown that the Windows 7 operating system can work on slates, if you cover it with a really good shell.

•One size doesn’t fit all. Consumers have shown that they’re hp pavilion dv2000 battery interested in a wide range of tablet sizes and formats, including the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab. RIM’s 7-inch BlackBerry PlayBook is also generating a lot of interest from consumers and business customers alike. You just have to provide a compelling hp pavilion dv6500 battery user experience.

•Tablet users want to travel light. Weight and battery life matter a whole lot. Users may like the large screen on hp pavilion dv6000 battery an 11.6-inch device like the ExoPC Slate, but its 2.2-pound weight is an issue. The now defunct (with the exception of vertical markets) hp pavilion dv2500 battery JooJoo from Fusion Garage measured 12 inches and weighed a whopping 2.4 pounds. A weight below 1.5 pounds and a battery life of over 6 hours should be table stakes in this game.

•Don’t charge more than Apple. AT&T is charging $50 more for the Samsung Galaxy Tab than the iPad, and Netbook Navigator is actually demanding hp pavilion dv9000 battery hundreds more for a device with a resistive touchscreen and short battery life. If you want to compete, you have to meet or beat Apple hp pavilion dv8000 battery on price. Humble Augen and CherryPad have shown us that a company can sell a tablet for under $200. If they only had hp pavilion tx1000 battery capacitive touchscreens and good preloaded markets, they’d really have something. A bigger player will probably learn from this and release a high-quality, low-cost slate in 2011.

•There’s still room for real keyboards. The iPad is huge today, but other companies can build wildly successful slates that take a different path. Imagine how much compaq evo n410c battery better the swiveling Inspiron Duo might be if it ran the next version of Android and was powered by an ARM processor. We compaq evo n610c battery also see room for slates that offer pen input, provided it gets paired with the right apps.

As with prior gold rushes, the excitement of the Tablet rush dell studio 17 battery of 2010 will eventually ebb as smaller prospectors drop out and larger companies grab their territories. But all these failed ventures will lead to huge successes for those who watch carefully. Just as the underwhelming OLPC XO showed us that an inexpensive dell studio 1737 battery ultraportable was possible and the contemptible Cloudbook was the first to employ a large The storage device that holds your OS, programs, dell studio 1535 battery and data.

Barnes & Noble is on a roll this month. Between launching the dell latitude e5500 battery Nook Color, Nook Kids books and over a hundred Nook magazines and newspapers in color, you’d think the digital publishing arm of the company could kick back until CES. But apparently not. Today the company announced NOOKbooks dell latitude e6400 battery en español, a digital bookstore of Spanish language titles. The books on offer include Spanish language bestsellers, new releases, works in translation dell latitude e6500 battery and classic books (many of which will be free). The catalog is said to include a third of the top-selling trade titles in Spanish.

NOOKbooks en español will, of course, be available across the entire dell latitude e4300 battery Barnes & Noble Nook ecosystem from the eReaders down to the apps and desktop software. Check out the new section here

How do you differentiate between a "consumer" smart phone and a "business" smart phone? Motorola attempts to answer that question dell vostro 1510 battery with the Droid Pro ($179 on Verizon), an Android 2.2 device with a physical QWERTY keyboard, a pre-installed light version of the Quickoffice dell vostro 1310 battery Mobile Suite, and Microsoft Exchange support for secure corporate e-mail. But while Motorola has added these pro amenities, you'll need to make Dell inspiron 1545 battery some sacrifices to carry this BlackBerry alternative, including a half inch of screen size. So should business users opt for the Droid Pro over consumer-focused Droids good battery and RIM's latest devices? It depends on your priorities.

ASUS U33JC Performance, ASUS U33JC Benchmarks and ASUS U33JC Battery Life

Performance and Benchmarks

In terms of raw performance, the ASUS U33JC-A1 is a bit of a mixed bag. The Intel vgp-bps21a Core i3 370M processor running at 2.40GHz provides plenty of horsepower for running typical applications and multitasking while keeping vgp-bps21 power consumption relatively low. The 4GB of system memory lets you run multiple applications at the same time without too much of a slow down and the 500GB hard drive has plenty of room for your media library (though the hard drive isn't toshiba pa3535u-1brs battery particularly fast).

The real news, for better or worse, is the Nvidia discrete graphics.

Anyone who has read a few of the initial reviews of the ASUS U33JC-A1 on other Toshiba PA3534U-1BRS Battery sites has probably seen the drama focused on gaming performance. Specifically, the new U33JC-A1 with Nvidia GeForce 310M VGP-BPS9 Battery graphics underperforms compared to the older U30JC-A1 both in 3DMark synthetic gaming benchmarks and in real-world gaming tests. This, despite the fact that the older U30JC-A1 has half the amount of dedicated memory as the new U33JC VGP-BPS10 Battery Bamboo.

This may indeed be a concern for gamers, but average consumers won't need to worry too VGP-BPS9/B Battery much. Nvidia created a new version of the GeForce 310M which lowered clocks slightly from 625MHz to 606MHz while increasing GP-BPS9/S Battery the frame buffer size from 512MB to 1GB. The memory clock remained at 790MHz. Nvidia claims the difference in core clock should only result in a performance change of approximately 3% in a few isolated cases, and will be offset with driver improvements VGP-BPS9A/B Battery through the Nvidia Verde driver program. Unfortunately, ASUS decided to run the memory clock in the U33JC-A1 at 667MHz instead vgp-bps13b/q battery of 790MHz in order to increase battery life.

In real-world use this means the U33JC Bamboo can still vgp-bps13a/q battery play games like World of Warcraft at the native screen resolution of 1366x768, but newer first person shooter games like Left 4 Dead or Resident Evil 5 aren't particularly playable. Still, considering how weak the graphics are in many 13-inch laptops,vgp-bps13/b battery the U33JC-A1 still does an okay job.

The only thing that really bothered us about the U33JC was the inclusion of way too much bloatware. vgp-bps13/q battery There are 19 extra bloatware icons on the Windows desktop when you first turn on the laptop. That's 19 more than there needs to be. VGP-BPS13 battery There are close to 90 processes running in the background when you first start Windows ... there simply shouldn't be that much stuff going on in the VGP-BPS13A/B Battery background.

Heat and Noise

The ASUS U33JC Bamboo does a decent job controlling heat and noise. The self-adjusting fan speeds usually stay well below what you Dell latitude d620 battery can hear in a quiet room, and the heat pours out of the vent on the left hand side. The closest thing to a "hot spot" on the bottom of the Dell xps m1330 battery notebook was the area under the access panel where the RAM and hard drive are located. This area heated up to close to 100 degrees Dell inspiron 6400 battery Fahrenheit, but the rest of the notebook remained pretty "lap friendly" during our heat tests in the lab. The external temperatures recorded below are listed in degrees Dell inspiron 1501 battery Fahrenheit.

Battery Life

In the "balanced" power mode with 75% screen brightness, the U33JC-A1 lasted for six hours and 12 minutes of non-stop use while surfing Dell inspiron e1505 battery the Internet and using a word processor. This is very good for a notebook with a stock battery. We're seeing more and more notebooks Dell latitude d820 battery that deliver 5+ hours of battery life with light, non-stop usage, so we're happy whenever we see a notebook provide six or more hours Dell inspiron 1545 battery of continuous run time. Of course, the battery can last even longer if you lower the screen brightness and occasionally let the system go to sleep. On the other hand, if you're running applications that stress the processor, hard drive, or Nvidia Dell vostro 1000 battery graphics then you can expect the battery life to drop even lower.

Conclusion

The ASUS U33JC-A1 is an extremely attractive and extremely well built laptop with a few annoying Dell gd761 battery little issues. First, the fact that ASUS weakened the Nvidia graphics in order to extend battery life means you don't get the best possible Dell latitude d830 battery performance out of this laptop. Second, the keyboard is a mixture of nice keys with horribly mushy support/feedback underneath. Last, but certainly not least is the issue of ASUS loading way too much bloatware onto the laptop straight from the delll battery factory.

On the brighter side, the U33JC features that fabulous bamboo inlay on the lid and the palm rests. good battery The webcam privacy switch is a simple yet much loved addition. The inclusion of USB 3.0 and wireless display technology likewise provide terrific value. sony battery And let's not forget about the battery life: roughly six hours on non-stop wireless usage in a coffee shop or on a cross-country flight is a great thing.

If you can look past the minor blemishes the ASUS U33JC-A1 is one jewel appleb battery of a notebook.

Mint.com Provide a free web service

This finance app, free across platforms, doesn't just show you how much vgp-bps21a money you have in the bank; it also shows where your money goes, and helps you stick to a budget.

Mint.com, a free web service that lets users vgp-bps21 monitor the balances for their various bank and credit accounts, and also helps them create budgets, has become something of a household name in the three years since it launched: it currently boasts over 1 million users, and is adding 3,000 per day. In fact, it's already vgp-bps13/b won a four-star review from us and has made the shortlist of our favorite iPhone apps. Now available for free on the iPhone and iPad and, most vgp-bps13/q recently, on Android, it's still one of our favorite finance apps, particularly for people who want a better handle on where their money goes each vgp-bps13a/q month.

Getting Started

Setting up a Mint.com account is free, and requires little information to start. Although you don't have to right away, there is a wide selection vgp-bps13b/q of banks and institutions whose accounts you can access through Mint.com. This includes not just banks and credit card companies, but VGP-BPS13 stores that issue credit cards, such as Gap. Unlike more complicated finance apps, such as Splashmoney, you won't have to enter any VGP-BPS13A/B account numbers or routing numbers; just enter the username and password that you would use to access that account online (e.g., on CitiCards.com).

For the most part, adding accounts was quick and easy, although we encountered an error when setting up a Bank of America account. At least,VGP-BPS9 though, the error message described it as a known error and suggested we try again later, which meant we didn't waste our time VGP-BPS9/B trying in vain to add that account at that moment.

Mobile Apps

In the case of both the Android and iPhone VGP-BPS9/S apps, Mint is all about the big picture. On both apps' home screens, the first two things you'll see are red and green color-coded bars showing whether you've exceeded your budget, and also how much money you have once you take into account all of your bank accounts VGP-BPS9A/B and looming credit card bills.

While it's nice to not be overwhelmed with stats as soon as you open the app, we found VGP-BPS2A this single balance to be misleading. Our balance, for instance, didn't include the paycheck we were about to receive, and also subtracted our credit VGP-BPS2C card balance from our pool of money as if we had already paid it. Ultimately, we found it more useful to jump to the accounts page and see how much money was available in our primary checking account and how much money we had racked up on our credit card. Here, you can VGP-BPS2 see a neat list of accounts and balances, which are further divided into categories such as "Credit cards" and "Cash" (i.e., checking VGP-BPS2B accounts).

Budgeting and Goals

Compared to Pageonce, another popular finance PA3594U-1BRS app that aggregates bank account information, Mint is best for seeing not just what your balances are, but where your money goes. When you dig into the Cash Flow section of the app, you can see how much you spent on utilities, restaurants, clothing. Mint.com is smart enough pa3535u-1brs to know that when you pay ConEd or Time Warner, for example, you're paying utility bills.

From the website Mint.com, you can customize your budget, adding categories and removing studio 17 battery ones that aren't relevant to you. In creating a budget, you can do more than just specify how much money you'd like to spend in a studio 1737 battery given area per month; you can also set aside recurring payments, such as a mortgage payment or monthly rent. Unfortunately, users can't add bank accounts or adjust their budgets from the Android or iPhone studio 1535 battery app.

In addition to assisting you with sticking to a budget, Mint can help you achieve a larger e5500 battery financial goal, such as getting out of debt, saving enough money for retirement, or buying a home. For each of these goals, Mint has a e6400 battery template, as well as national averages to help you estimate how your saving will progress. If you're interested in buying a home, for instance, Mint asks you to plug in your salary, and uses national averages for monthly maintenance payments and interest rates to calculate how much you can afford to e6500 battery spend. While not the be-all and end-all, this information is helpful, and the fact that users have to plug in so little information makes e4300 battery these templates simple to use.

Alerts

If you want to use Mint not just to glance vostro 1510 battery at your balance information, but to become a more responsible spender (or saver), you can set up alerts, which you can receive via e-mail or SMS. By default, for instance, we received an e-mail informing us that our checking account balance was low. (It wasn't, in our opinion.) There's vostro 1310 battery also an Alerts section in both the Android and iOS apps, but its information isn't always relevant. For instance, the iPhone app good battery displayed our credit card bill as an alert, even though we had long since paid it.

Verdict

While Mint.com and its free iPhone and dell battery Android apps easily and safely sync with your bank accounts, displaying account balances for each, what it really excels at is helping people become more fiscally responsible, whether that means sticking to a budget or exercising willpower while saving up for something important. While its popular competitor sony battery Pageonce (also free) shows a wider variety of information, such as social networking updates and flight stats, Mint.com remains hp battery the best choice for people who want to see not just how much money they have left but where their money has gone.

In some ways the phone is like the Samsung Epic 4G

The Samsung Transform is a phone that actually lives up to its name—with VGP-BPS13 Sprint ID packs, the phone’s Android software can “transform” into a different phone experience. But even with this idea behind it, the phone is too pricey to be VGP-BPS13A/S an extremely average offering.

In some ways the phone is like the Samsung Epic 4G, except shrunk down and without 4G. On the plus side, the device has a great QWERTY VGP-BPS13A/B keyboard, nice Android 2.1 software, and good call quality. On the downside, it has a low-resolution 3.5-inch HVGA screen at VGP-BPS9 480 x 320 pixels, an 800-MHz processor that gets bogged down easily by the software, and slightly slow load times on the web.

The Samsung Transform is one of the first Sprint ID Android VGP-BPS8 phones, along with the Kyocera Zio and the LG Optimus S. This allows the user to switch between different profiles like EA Games, which lets the user demo games and use EA titles for your wallpaper, or The Big Apple, which has New-York-centric apps VGP-BPS9A/B and wallpaper.

At $149, the Transform doesn’t price right and doesn’t fit well into Sprint’s competition. For those VGP-BPS9/B who want a low-end QWERTY Android phone, there is the Samsung Intercept for $99. If you can live without a keyboard, the $199 HTC Evo VGP-BPS9/S 4G is a better deal. If you need a keyboard, the $249 Epic 4G is worth the investment, especially when considering the cost over two years

A lot of phone names these days seem pretty random, but in this case, the name actually fits the product. Thanks to the new Sprint ID feature, the VGP-BPS8A Samsung Transform lets you download different packs of apps, widgets, and shortcuts to literally transform this Android phone's VGP-BPS2 personality. Choices range from branded ID packs such as Yahoo and EA to themes including Golf Enthusiast and Entertainment. This $149 device also VGP-BPS2A features a comfy slide-out keyboard and a front-facing camera for video calls, perks lower-end Sprint ID-capable phones such as the LG Optimus S ($49) and the Sanyo Zio ($99) lack. Still, $149 is a lot to spend on a device that doesn't have 4G data capability or a high-res screen. Does VGP-BPS2B the Transform have enough going for it, or would that dough be better spent on an Evo 4G or Epic 4G?

Design

At least with the 3.5-inch screen off, the Transform could easily be mistaken for the Epic 4G. They're VGP-BPS2C both solidly built handsets with unassuming rounded edged and hard black plastic on the back. The Transform measures 4.6 x 2.4 x .6 inches VGP-BPS13A/Q and weighs 5.4 ounces, while the Epic is taller and slightly wider and heavier (4.9 x 2.5 x 0.6 inches and 5.5 ounces), owing to its larger 4-inch display. This is a reasonable size and weight for a phone with a physical keyboard, which slides out VGP-BPS13/B easily.

The top of the device has a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microUSB port. The right side VGP-BPS13B/B has a volume rocker, and the left side has three buttons--one for power/sleep, one for voice commands, and one for the VGP-BPS13B/Q camera.

Display

The Transform has a 3.5-inch HVGA touch screen with 480 x 320 resolution. The screen can get plenty bright if the user chooses, but VGP-BPS13/Q colors are muted and text looked fuzzy on some pages. The screen takes to fingerprints and smudges easily. Compared to the good battery Epic 4G's 4-inch Super AMOLED screen with 800 x 480 resolution, the Transform's display looks lackluster.

Keyboards

The full QWERTY keyboard on the Transform is dell battery the best feature the device has to offer. Gray keys and orange accents give it a hip feel. It's very comfortable overall, and there is enough spacing to type quickly and accurately. We only wish that the flat keys were raised a little more. The virtual Android keyboard works fine, but it doesn't hp battery have Swype pre-installed like the Epic 4G. Since the physical keyboard is available, we'd much rather use that dell battery anyway.

Acer Aspire One D255

One of the first netbooks with Intel's mobile dell latitude e5500 battery dual-core Atom processor offers slightly improved performance but not the best user experience.

The Acer Aspire One D255 (price not yet announced) is Acer's first dual-core netbook, and one of the first 10-inchers anywhere dell latitude e6400 battery to use Intel's new Atom N550 processor. The netbook's benchmark performance is moderately better than single-core competitors. We dell latitude e6500 battery also like how portable this design is, even when compared to other lightweight netbooks. However, is the D255 fast enough to dell latitude e4300 battery overcome some of its flaws?

Design

At 2.4 pounds and 10.1 x 7.3 x .95 inches, the D255 is smaller and lighter than competitors like the Eee PC 1215N (11.6 x 8 x 1.4 inches, 3.4 pounds), the dell vostro 1510 battery Samsung N150 Plus (10.4 x 7.4 x 1.4 inches, 2.8 pounds), and the Toshiba NB305 (10.5 x 7.6 x 1.2 inches, 2.8 pounds). dell vostro 1310 battery When carrying it around in our bag, we hardly felt its weight.

If you've seen other Aspire One netbooks, the Aspire Dell inspiron 1545 battery One D255 will look very familiar too you because it shares their slim but somewhat generic design. Its glossy black lid is emblazoned with a drab Aspire One logo and picks up finger prints, but it's so dark you will hardly notice them. On the inside, a glossy bezel Dell inspiron 1525 battery surrounds the extremely glossy screen, making it even more reflective. There's also a gap between the lid and the base of the chassis Dell latitude d630 battery that's large enough to fit a pen through. You'll also find a matte gray deck and an island-style keyboard.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The island-style keyboard on the Aspire One D255 has the same "fine tip" design as other Acer netbooks Dell studio 15 battery and notebooks. Though the keys are large and extend end-to-end across the chassis, we found the overall typing experience Dell latitude d620 battery cramped because of the narrow chassis and short palm rest that had our wrists hanging over the front lip. In addition, we noticed a little flex when we pressed down on the G and H keys. However, despite these issues, we were able to achieve our typical 80 words per Dell xps m1330 battery minute score on the ten thumbs typing test, with a slightly higher than usual 2 percent Dell inspiron 6400 battery error rate.

The 3 x 1.5-inch touchpad suffers from very serious inaccuracy problems. As we navigated around the desktop, Dell inspiron 1501 battery occasionally the pointer would suddenly jump a few pixels and other times it seemed to slow to a crawl. This inaccuracy Dell inspiron e1505 battery was more pronounced when tasks such as web page loading were occurring in the background. The pad supports multitouch gestures such as pinch-to-zoom but isn't smooth or consistent. Though we prefer two discrete mouse buttons, the D255's single-button bar Dell latitude d820 battery offered good tactile feedback without being too stiff.

Heat

The Aspire One D255 stayed relatively cool throughout our testing. Even after streaming a video at full Dell vostro 1000 battery screen for 15 minutes, we measured the keyboard at just 84 degrees, the touchpad at 85 degrees, and the bottom at a chilly 89 Dell gd761 battery degrees Fahrenheit. We consider temperatures near 95 degrees Fahrenheit acceptable and those under 95 extremely pleasant. However, all that heat has to go somewhere. The air vent belched out 107-degree air, but not in the user's Dell latitude d830 battery direction.

Ports and Webcam

The Aspire One D255 has a standard array of netbook ports. On the right side are a memory Dell inspiron 1520 battery card reader, audio in/out jacks, a USB port, a Kensington lock slot, and an Ethernet port. On the left side are a VGA out and two more USB ports, for a total of three.

The 1.3-megapixel webcam produced good battery blurry images that were completely washed out under fluorescent light. During a Skype call from our cubicle, our face was completely covered by shadow. When we moved next to a window, the image quality improved but was still good batteries a bit grainy.

Display and Sound

The Aspire One D255's 10.1-inch, 1024 x 600-pixel screen provided battery strong viewing angles, despite its glossy surface. Even at 45 degrees to the left or right, images got a little darker but did not wash out. Intel says that the Atom batteries N550 improves high-def video playback, but when we downloaded a 720p QuickTime trailer of Saw 3D, playback was noticeably jerky. Streaming full-screen 720p Flash videos from Fox.com and another from YouTube, however, was smooth.

Audio quality from the bottom-mounted speakers was loud enough to fill a room, though somewhat tinny when we streamed dell batteries "Party Train" by the Gap Band from Napster. Unfortunately, when we moved the pointer around during audio playback, we occasionally sony battery noticed some distortion as the audio itself seemed to slow down at times.

The HP Pavilion dm4 14-inch notebook is not sacrificing too much screen space

It’s midterm season students, why not help yourselves out VGP-BPS13A/S with a powerful notebook to pull you through it all?

The HP Pavilion dm4 14-inch VGP-BPS13 notebook is sized just right for stow and go computing while not sacrificing too much screen space. Is It Too Late for Windows Phone 7?

Microsoft's completely revamped mobile operating system takes a fresh Sony VGP-BPS8 Battery approach to smart phones, but its unique strengths might not be enough to take on Apple and Google.

After Apple unveiled the sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery iPhone in 2007, it was the rest of the mobile tech industry's move. Google, of course, followed up with Android, shipping its first handset the following year. Palm's answer was webOS, the much-hyped operating system announced in 2009 whose corresponding devices never really took off. (HP saw potential and acquired the company earlier this year.) RIM has built the largest market share on the back of its great keyboards and long battery life, and it recently gave its operating system a better browser and more consumer-friendly aesthetics.

During this time Microsoft has remained mum, even as its dated Windows Mobile OS, primarily targeted toward corporate customers, Sony VGP-BPS9A/B Battery continued to bleed market share. Finally, back in February, Microsoft unveiled its answer to Android and iOS: Windows Phone 7. The slick interface, complete with customizable tiles for the home screen, includes hubs that integrate with Xbox Live, Office, and even Zune Marketplace. This effort represents a complete do-over on Microsoft's part.

But is it too little too late? Do Google and Apple have too much momentum for Microsoft to sony VGP-BPS9 battery regain its footing? Could Windows Phone 7 sway customers away from the tried-and-true BlackBerry franchises, or will they balk?

Playing Catch-Up

According to the NPD Group, RIM commands sony VGP-BPS9/S battery 28 percent of the U.S. smart phone market, thanks in part to deployment through large companies and a proliferation of lower-cost devices such as the BlackBerry Curve. However, many analysts believe it's now a two-horse race between Android and iPhone. With the exception of AT&T, currently the exclusive seller of the iPhone, every U.S. carrier's smart phone lineup is built primarily on Android handsets--lots of 'em. Because the OS is available on so many networks in so many phones, Android accounts for a leading 33 percent market share in the U.S. The iPhone accounts for 22 percent market share.

Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for consumer technology at NPD, says Android and iPhone will continue to Studio 17 Battery make inroads, but that doesn't mean there isn't room for Windows Phone 7. "[It] should offer a number of features that enterprise users are interested in," he said, emphasizing the fact that various carriers and hardware makers have already pledged their support. AT&T, for example, has said it will be the premier partner for Windows Phone 7.

Microsoft had, up until recently, been developing Kin, an OS aimed at young people. But it killed Studio 1737 Battery the project after some 18 months of development and just 8 weeks of sales. To the pessimist, the fact that Microsoft attempted to develop and explain the two operating systems concurrently suggests that the company has a misguided mobile strategy. To the optimist, Microsoft saw the error of its ways and can now devote more engineering resources to perfecting Windows Phone 7, and even more marketing dollars to making it a commercial success.

"Kin was a distraction, a fork of Windows Phone 7 Dell Studio 1535 Battery that diluted the identity of that operating system," said Rubin (whom we'll call an optimist). "It showed that some features of Windows Phone 7, such as adding bubbling status updates to the top of the user interface and Zune integration, failed to carry the platform, but it's not fair to judge Windows Phone 7's prospects by the Kin experience." Even if these marquee features alone couldn't make Kin a winner, Rubin believes the phone was also doomed because it forced Microsoft to compete with its own hardware and carrier partners. Windows Phone 7, at least, has the unequivocal support of everyone involved.

Why Hubs Matter

For Microsoft, the Hub paradigm is what really makes Windows Phone 7 stand out. Hubs, by definition, let users customize how information is presented VGP-BPS13B/Q so they can view it in ways that make sense to them. "It allows users to focus on what's most important and works the way they want," explained Aaron Woodman, director of consumer experiences for Microsoft. For example, in the e-mail Hub, you can swipe from left to right to view your whole inbox, urgent messages, or ones you've flagged.

Michael Gartnenberg, a partner at the Altimeter Group, says Microsoft's differentiated approach is important VGP-BPS13/B because the phone becomes organized by common tasks and not by discrete, single-function good battery applications. Why stop what you're doing to open a Facebook app and view your albums, for instance, when you can see your Facebook photos alongside the rest of your pictures (and your friends') in a single pictures Hub? "They're doing a lot of things the right way, and if you're a competitor you underestimate Microsoft at your own peril," he said.

Part of what makes this interface a departure from the usual row upon row Sony Laptop Battery of app icons is how Microsoft has abandoned analog metaphors, such as notepads or file folders. "With Windows Phone 7, Microsoft has really focused on letting digital be digital," said Gartenberg. "You don't see a lot of shiny edges or 3D effects." By sticking to the idea that a phone's home screen should resemble a PC desktop, which in and of itself mimics a real desk, folders and all, other phone makers are stuck with rows of apps, none of which talk to each other. Instead, Microsoft lets users swipe from left to right, seeing related screens in a Hub.

In Your Face: Are We Ready for Smart Phone Video Calling?

Super-sharp screens. 1-GHz processors. HDMI output. Today’s smart phones Sony VGP-BPS8 Battery have a lot in common with laptops, but the most intriguing addition is staring you right in the face. The HTC Evo 4G, iPhone 4, and Samsung Epic 4G are among some of the first superphones equipped with cameras on the front, which are designed to enable two-way video calls. Although it’s a niche activity now, video calling promises to be huge within the next few years. Think about watching your niece’s graduation from across the country, or virtually seeing the Grand Canyon through your son’s eyes (and phone)—these are just some sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery of the ways video calling will soon be used.

Alfred Poor, senior analyst at NanoMarkets, recently estimated that 3.2 million people will have the capability VGP-BPS9A/B Battery for mobile video chats by the end of 2010, and that by 2015 142 million people will be ringing up their friends for a video conversation.

However, just because the technology is there doesn’t mean that people will use it. And VGP-BPS9 even if they do, will the experience VGP-BPS9A/B Battery be satisfying enough for the masses?

One service leading the mobile video calling is VGP-BPS9/S battery Qik, which provides live video streaming and video chat from mobile devices. The video chat service made its debut earlier this year on the HTC Evo 4G, and will be available on more Android phones this fall. Bhasker Roy, cofounder and vice president of product marketing for Qik, says people on vacation have been among the first users. “[If] someone is traveling, they want to share something and have a video chat with their family members,” he said.

Although video calling may seem like it has come out of nowhere, the technology has been in the works for a very long time. The first Dell Studio 17 Battery consumer-use video phone, AT&T’s Bell Labs Picturephone, made its debut more than 40 years ago at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York. Sadly, the technology never caught on, in part due to the bulky equipment, high cost, and special wiring it required. The technology has since evolved to the point where many businesses conduct video conference calls via telepresence today. Likewise, today’s consumer video chats mostly involve sitting in front of your computer and visually chatting using Google Talk, iChat, Skype, or Dell Studio 1737 Battery other instant messaging services.

“The problem with the video phone was that you had to Dell Studio 1535 Battery have the device at both ends, and that was an expensive proposition,” said Poor. “What happened between then and now is that lots of people got the hardware they needed, so all Skype had to do was come along and give them the software.” AT&T tried its hand at making the video calling experience mobile back in 2007 with Video Share, but the calls went only one way. Plus, you had to pay a hefty $5 for 25 minutes of sharing.

User Experience is Key

According to Michael Gartenberg, partner and analyst at the Altimeter Group, mobile video chat will be widely adopted VGP-BPS13B/Q in the U.S. if the client is simple to use and provides a good overall experience. Although Apple’s FaceTime is currently limited to Wi-Fi only, he feels that this constraint allows for better performance. Combined with the popularity of the iPhone 4, he believes that as a person’s network of friends who also own FaceTime–capable iPhones grows, video chat will become more common.

Services such as Fring are also enabling smart phone owners to conduct two-way VGP-BPS13/B video calls. At first, users were able to dial Skype numbers on the desktop. However, that relationship recently fell apart, presumably because Skype is gearing up to offer its own service. Still, Fring members can easily chat with each other.

Although Apple is concentrating on mobile devices Sony VGP-BPS13 Battery for now, it’s highly likely that FaceTime will make its way to the iPod touch and the desktop. “Maybe someone builds a PC application so that if you’re a FaceTime user on your iPhone, you can connect with someone on a PC or a Macintosh,” said Gartenberg. “It isn’t necessarily going to just be mobile vendors who are looking at this. It may be someone who [finds] an entirely different application.”

Although Fring and Qik can do video chats over 3G, the user experience isn’t always the most stable. Pictures can be blurry, Sony VGP-BPS13A/B Battery and audio might be out of sync with the video. That’s why Apple’s FaceTime is only available over Wi-Fi; this constraint allows the picture to come through in a higher quality. Gartenberg believes that providing the best user experience possible is more important than where you can make calls from. “What you don’t want is 3G calls made from here to Skype, but with jittery or buggy user experiences,“ he said. “Whereas if you’ve talked to people who have used FaceTime [over Wi-Fi], most have had a pretty good experience. And over time those constraints will go by the wayside.”

On the one hand, Qik’s Roy doesn’t believe the lack of widespread 4G networks will hinder the growth Dell GD761 Battery of mobile video calling, in part because Qik’s live video streaming service has run on 2G and 3G networks. While that’s not as intensive as two-way mobile chat, he notes that in the first months of the HTC Evo 4G’s release, they saw most users relying on 3G because 4G is not yet prevalent all over the U.S. “I don’t think the 3G network is that big of a limitation,” he said. “One element of that could be the way we have built the technology.”

On the other hand, NanoMarkets’ Poor feels that high expectations toshiba PA3534U-1BRS Battery may result in mobile video not living up to its promise. “I think there’s a real danger of raising expectations too high on the mobile front,” he said. “People may expect to do [video calls] wirelessly anywhere and not understand that they’re limited.” Initially they could be disappointed and discouraged if it’s over-hyped, but there’s definitely real potential.

Social Implications

So what will it look like when everyone is holding their smart phones at arm’s length and waving wildly at their screen? Marc A. Smith, PhD, chief dell Vostro 1710 Battery social scientist for the Connected Action Consulting Group, isn’t so sure that consumers will want to risk looking dorky while walking down the street conducting a video chat. Combine that with the general issue of distraction that occurs now with people walking and texting, and it doesn’t seem like a great proposition. It’s more likely that users will make video calls while in one location, whether it’s Times Square or a living room.

However, video chat has a serious leg up on traditional phone calls when it comes to dell Vostro 1720 Battery paying attention. “Video demands almost fully immersed engagement in order to use it effectively, [otherwise] it becomes a channel in which the lack of immersion is very, very visible,” said Dr. Smith. “In other words, if I don’t have my eyes focused on the camera, it’s obvious that I’m looking away. So, video imposes this enormous additional burden in terms of performance attention that the audio-only channel does not demand. I think [when video is] available and everyone can use it, we’ll suddenly realize that we don’t want it for a lot of different things.”

At the same time, live video provides a “you are there” experience dell Latitude E5400 Battery that, when it’s good, is second to actually being there. The quality has as much to do with who’s holding the camera as it does with the technology working correctly. Anyone who’s suffered through Uncle Rodney’s home video of a 4-hour walking tour through Mayan ruins knows that every step and stumble results in a bouncy, jerky video that makes it an unpleasant experience for the viewer. This is something that mobile video callers will need to keep in mind. Dr. Smith goes so far as to suggest that phone video chats come with a label that says, “You should sit down now” as a prevention against distracted walking that could result in dell Latitude E4300 Battery injury as well as bad video.

While it’s possible that mobile video calls may alter trust in interpersonal and office relationships, Smith doesn’t believe the technology differs that much from location-based services. “What happens when you’re in physical locations that you don’t really want to share with your work party?” he asked. “This isn’t entirely bound to the video. If you use Foursquare or any of the other check-in services, workplaces might want to know where your are; should they see a five-hour-old check-in, dell Latitude E6500 Battery they might think evilly [of your activities].”

The Future

As phones with front-facing cameras and mobile video calling apps become more common, it’s good battery quite likely that you’ll eventually become a mobile video chatter. However, having a decent front-facing camera is not enough; the software needs to be dead simple to use, and the service has to work.

Altimeter Group’s Gartenberg predicts that video calling will go good battery mainstream in about 18 months. “If you consider that we first saw video phones introduced in the ‘60s at the World’s Fair, people have been waiting for this,” he said. “But they’ve been waiting for the simplicity. It’s the ubiquitous nature of FaceTime that makes it work. We’ll start seeing it as a mainstream activity as the networks become more robust and as the applications continue to mature.”

Asus N82Jv-X1

The Nvidia Optimus version of this 14-inch system is an improvement Sony VGP-BPS8 Battery over the original, but battery life is still lacking.

The ASUS N82Jv-X1 is a great system that's short on time. It has an eye-catching lid covering a powerful Core i5 processor and a discrete GPU, plus Nvidia's graphics-switching Optimus technology. Unfortunately, like its non-Optimus sibling, a sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery short battery life hinders its endurance, but if you can find an outlet quick enough this system will make sure you don't regret it.

Design

At 5.2 pounds and 13.8 x 9.7 x 1.4 inches, the N82Jv-X1 ($999) is a little heavier and thicker than competitors Sony VGP-BPS9A/B Battery such as the lighter and slimmer Gateway ID49C08u. Though it's light enough to carry in your bag, the N82Jv-X1's bulk takes up more space than we'd like.

The lid is fitted with an interesting cubed pattern in dark brown that has a metallic VGP-BPS9 effect when the light hits it just right. Similar to the Asus N82JQ-A1, the inside deck is accented with a soft-touch matte finish that helps keep the area fingerprint-free.

The right physical power button (which has a white status VGP-BPS9/S indicator light) and corresponding left instant-on button fit in with the design of the N82Jv-X1, but we would've liked to see shortcut launch keys or dedicated media controls. Having to use a function command to adjust the volume (Function key + F12 to increase or F11 to decrease) during gameplay is slightly annoying.

The ASUS N82Jv's chiclet-style keyboard provided adequate feedback, important when playing first-person shooters, Akku Sony VGP-BPS8 and we have no complaints about the key arrangement. We noticed less flex with the N82Jv-X1 compared to the N82Jq-A1.

The 3.25 x 2-inch touchpad is fairly large and has a textured surface (the same as the cubed pattern on the lid) VGP-BPS8a that prevented our finger from slipping when gaming or navigating through Windows 7. Its single mouse button was a bit stiffer than we'd like, though.

Display and Audio

The glossy 14-inch, 1366 x 768-pixel LED-backlit display Akku HP PB992A produced reasonably bright images and sharp colors, but viewing angles left something to be desired. The screen's high gloss can be a distraction in certain conditions, but the trade-off for deeper colors is worth it. The glare wasn't disruptive even in our well-lit lab, though sunlight was a much larger problem.

When watching videos, playback on the ASUS N82Jv-X1 was smooth and noise-free. Streaming "The Wanda Sykes Show" from Akku HP compaq NX7400 FOX.com was smooth, but picture quality was noticeably pixelated. However, pixelation was absent when watching a 720p trailer of the movie "Takers" streamed in QuickTime.

Despite being positioned below the keyboard, the Altec Lansing speakers were Dell Studio 17 Battery loud and clear while listening to Jay-Z and Tupac via Pandora, and we didn't hear any distortion or tinniness typical of most notebook speakers. Their position on the front lip of the system helps keep the speakers from accidentally being blocked while typing. At maximum volume, the sound isn't overpowering, yet it's loud enough to fill a quiet medium-size room.

Ports and Webcam

The N82Jv-X1 certainly isn't lacking for ports. On the left Dell Studio 1737 Battery side of the system is a VGA connection, headphone and mic inputs, an HDMI port, and a super-fast USB 3.0 port. Hidden behind a small plastic door on the right side is a standard USB 2.0 connector, an eSATA port, and an Ethernet connection. Between the speakers on the front of the system is a 5-in-1 memory card reader.

The 2-megapixel webcam produced clear images when video conferencing through Skype and audio Sony Laptop Battery quality was crystal clear. On the other hand, images were a bit noisy and motion detection lagged a little. The N82Jv-X1 is bundled with ASUS's LifeFrame software that allows you to capture video

and snap pictures, then edit the content and apply special effects. Its facial recognition technology isn't perfect, but the pre-effects in LifeFrame are worth trying out.

M101z Subnotebook Eingabegeräte

Tastatur

BitDefender Total Security 2011

The last time we reviewed BitDefender Total Security, it won our Sony VGP-BPS8 Battery Editors' Choice award, largely on account of its customizable user interface and strong parental controls. While it still has a unique range of user interfaces designed for people with different levels of tech-savviness, along with relatively strong parental controls, other security vendors have caught up in both the ease of use and parental controls departments, and also do a better job of keeping your PC running fast. Still, a few useful settings, including the ability to put off scans while you're gaming or using the PC unplugged, ensures that Total Security is still among our preferred security suites.

Installation

Total Security has a longer installation sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery process than its competitors, but that can be a good thing when you consider that it gives you the chance to configure features such as online backup and parental controls in one fell swoop. There's something to be said for taking a few minutes to activate all these features easily, especially if it means enjoying an easy user experience thereafter.

That the software runs a scan of your computer even before beginning the installation bodes well for its thoroughness in the security Sony VGP-BPS9A/B Batterydepartment. Once it does that, it will look for already installed security software. By default, there are checked boxes giving the software permission to disable Windows Firewall and Windows Defender (we agree that it's best not to have dueling security software programs running concurrently). Then, you'll enter your license key and create an account, providing an e-mail address and choosing a password (you'll have to confirm the account through a link in your e-mail).

This is where the installation takes a uniquely convenient turn. BitDefender lets you choose VGP-BPS9 between one of three interfaces: Basic, Intermediate, and Expert (you can see previews during installation, and change the view after installation if you don't like the experience). Users can also choose what BitDefender calls Tools, essentially icons for features such as parental controls, which will appear in a dashboard in whatever interface you choose.

While we're on the subject of choice, you can elect to VGP-BPS9/S set up parental controls, creating new Windows user accounts for your children if you want. It's also easy to set up home network management; BitDefender does a good job explaining the difference between a server PC and a client. You can even choose to see Internet safety tips on the home screen. The last setup screen gives you a rundown of all the features that will be at your disposal, and includes check boxes for running a scan after the installation has finished and scheduling a weekly scan (oddly, there were no options for more frequent or automatic scans).

User Interface

We appreciate that Total Security's user interface can look more or less simple, depending on how comfortable you are dell Vostro 1710 Battery at tweaking settings. As a general rule, the easier the interface, the larger and fewer the icons. Regardless of the interface you choose, you'll find that it relies on pop-up windows, whereas other programs, such as Norton 360, are all about navigating backward and forward within one box. While we usually prefer self-contained interfaces, these pop-ups didn't annoy us. There's also more clicking here: you'll have to click, not roll over, an icon such as Security to view more options.

Particularly for basic users, we love that in addition to security tips and a search bar toshiba PA3534U-1BRS Battery there are also video tips, helping newbies get oriented with the product.

The basic interface, specifically, has large icons Dell GD761 Battery for Security, Tune-Up, and My Tools, which in this case includes parental controls, quick scan, online backup and restore, and help & support. The tools also include Laptop and Game modes, which delay scans when the computer is unplugged or running a game (other suites don't have these features, particularly the Laptop mode).

The intermediate interface is considerably more complicated, featuring five tabs: Dashboard, File storage, Network, Security, VGP-BPS13/B and Tune-up. In this view, My Tools appears as a carousel of icons, as opposed to a single My Tools icon that hides a lengthier list of features. On the left-hand side is a list of details for the status of every major area, such as security and tune-up. Whereas the basic interface just shows one color-coded symbol, summarizing the state of the system, each major area of security in the intermediate UI has a color-coded icon next to it: a red exclamation point indicates there's something wrong; a green check mark means everything is okay; and a blue exclamation point is for non-urgent things you might want to pay attention to (say, registering the product). We wish BitDefender had stuck to the more intuitive red, green, and yellow color scheme Dell Studio 1535 Battery that other vendors use. In the basic version, you won't see such a list; just a single icon summarizing the state of the system.

The expert interface is somehow more streamlined, although its detailed options will intimidate (or just confuse) the average user. On top, there are just three tabs for finding the main dashboard, a page for adjusting general settings, Dell Studio 1737 Battery and reviewing system info (if "Known DLLs" means anything to you, try out this interface). Otherwise, you'll find all of the usual categories--Encryption, Firewall, and Parental Controls, among others--lining the left side of the screen.

Performance and PC Tuneup

BitDefender's security scanning system works by taking a snapshot of critical areas of your PC, and then processing Dell Studio 17 Battery this information in the cloud. With this version, BitDefender also introduced Search Advisor, which, like McAfee's Site Advisor, displays ratings next to Bing, Google, and Yahoo search results.

(Before we continue, a note: At the time of this writing, BitDefender 2011 dell Latitude E5400 Battery had yet to be tested, so the numbers we're using are for the 2010 version of the software.)

According to third-party tests, BitDefender isn't the best at detecting threats, but neither is it the worst. It picked up 50 percent of the malware thrown at it by Anti-Virus Comparative, giving it an Advanced+ rating. That's not as good as dell Latitude E4300 Battery Kaspersky (59 percent), but it's well above McAfee, which only caught 38 percent. Likewise, Dennis Publishing gave BitDefender a combined protection score of 68, below Norton 360 (80) and Kaspersky (76), but well above McAfee (43). However, in AV-Test.org's benchmarks, McAfee detected 87.2 percent of malware, compared to 84.3 percent for BitDefender.

Total Security wins performance points for offering both a Laptop and Game mode (Kaspersky, also a favorite among dell Latitude E6500 Battery techies, has comparable settings). Even without these modes enabled, though, we found that our Core i3-powered HP G62t ran speedily with Total Security running. For example, prescan, it took 1 second to launch Firefox; with a full scan in progress, launching this browser still took less than 2 seconds.

Total Security's arsenal of tools includes Registry Recover, Registry Cleaner, File Shredder, dell Latitude E5500 Battery Duplicate Finder, Disk Defragmenter, and a tool called PC Clean-Up, which clears the cache in Internet Explorer and Firefox, as well as the Recent Documents list and Temporary Files folder. We wish we could click a button to run all processes at once (we couldn't do this in any of the interfaces). In basic mode, only PC Clean-up and Disk Defragmenter are enabled by default. After running PC optimization tools (more on that in a minute), our bootup time remained the same: 1:17.

Online Backup

Like its competitors, Total Security 2011 comes Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad R60 Battery with 2GB of online storage space (except Webroot Internet Security Complete, which offers 10GB). Configuring automatic backups to a local hard drive is also possible. In deciding which folders you want to back up regularly, you can sift through a Windows folder tree, or jump straight to the ones listed under Common Files & Folders (e.g., Documents, Pictures). A calculator at the bottom of the screen shows how much storage space these files will require. You can set the backups to run hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly (you can also set backups to run manually, but we don't recommend this since studies show too many consumers forget to back up their stuff). If you want to encrypt files, you can also drop them in a file vault, which you'll also find under the file storage section. One thing the interface is missing is a link to Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad R61 Battery the online portal containing these files.

Parental Controls

To its credit, Total Security's parental controls are built into the main user interface, whereas Symantec sends you to a web portal in Norton 360. However, 360 has a slightly richer feature set and a more intuitive interface. Although we praised BitDefender's parental controls when we reviewed Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad T61 Battery Total Security 2010, and still think they're relatively strong, it's also true that other companies, particularly Symantec, have caught up.

For example, both products allow you to specify the age of your child, as well as allow Dell Vostro 1000 Battery or block certain categories of sites (the defaults change depending on the child's age). Whereas Symantec presents these categories as check boxes all on one page, however, BitDefender arranges them in a list that you have to scroll through, clicking on drop-down menus as you go to allow or block these categories. Symantec, too, lets you create an age-based profile for every child in the family.

BitDefender lets parents block children from using Dell Vostro 1400 Battery any desktop application, which is unique, but adding blocked sites is confusing. Also, BitDefender's approach to controlling instant-messaging programs is slightly cruder, simply letting parents block or allow certain IM handles. With Symantec, the options are more sophisticated: parents can block all new friends as a rule, or choose to log conversations.

BitDefender, like every other security vendor offering parental controls, allows good battery parents to allow block specific websites, as well as block access to search results derived from certain keywords. One thing it's missing: a mechanism to prevent children from revealing sensitive information, such as their address or phone number.

Verdict

Staying true to its geeky roots, BitDefender Total Security 2011 does an admirable job of offering advanced settings aplenty, as well as modes that delay scans until after games end or a laptop is plugged in. Still, other products, namely Symantec Norton 360 ($69.99) Sony Laptop Battery and Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 ($79.95), have caught up, offering stronger parental controls and doing a superior job of speeding up users' computers. And although it's more expensive and lacks tune-up tools and online backup, Kaspersky in particular does a better balancing act between keeping the interface simple while also offering options to power users who crave them. But if you're a geek's geek, BitDefender's slightly less straightforward UI won't faze you in the slightest, and you'll appreciate its full feature set.

Hands-on With FaceBook Places: Location-Based Service Feels Like a Ghost Town

Last Wednesday, Facebook rolled out Places–the Foursquare-esque Akku HP Compaq PB992A service that allows users to publicly check-in to any given location. Like with most new features that Facebook has launched as of late, Places raised quite a few concerns over privacy.

But after spending some time with Places Akku TK330 on Facebook’s iPhone app, we’d say that Facebook’s bigger concern should be over whether or not people actually use the service.

Right now, Places is only integrated onto the iPhone Facebook app. Android, BlackBerry, and non-mobile users VGP-BPS8 can post status updates through touch.facebook.com.

On the Facebook app, it’s easy to start using Places. The icon is situated right in VGP-BPS9/B Battery the middle of the app’s home page and pressing it pulls up a list that displays the current location of your friends and the time that they checked in. From here–or by pressing the Places marker next to the status update box–you can check into your current location.

Like on Foursquare, the number VGP-BPS9A/B Battery of available locations depends on where you are. Places generates a list of nearby places that you can check into and it’s fairly easy to find your actual location. If it’s not listed, you can create a listing for the place.

Once you’re on the check-in page, you can add an announcement and tag people. Afterward, the announcement–which includes VGP-BPS9 your current location–will be posted on your profile, your friends’ news feeds and the walls of anyone that was tagged. You’ll also show up in the Recent Activity section on the location’s page.

There are definitely some significant social ramifications to having people or advertisers VGP-BPS9/S constantly know your location (and likewise, there are ways to close those holes), but in terms of practical usage, it’s hard to draw any major conclusions just yet.

The fact that it only works well on a smartphone limits Sony Laptop Battery FaceBook Places’ adoption. When I tried to post a Places update on a desktop computer, my location couldn’t be found. As with most social networking applications, its success depends on popularity and so far it doesn’t seem to have captured many imaginations. Out of my 270 friends, only three (who are in the photo above) had used Places.

Eventually, Facebook says that more content will take advantage of location-based information. As a recent good battery Foursquare user who’s now addicted to badge gathering, I can certainly understand the appeal of adding location to my social networking routine. But until Facebook figures out a way to better integrate Places into the end-user experience, I’ll stick to something else if I want to let people know where I am.

Test HP EliteBook 2540p Subnotebook Leistung

Without Battery, MacBooks Take Big Perfomance Hit

Ever run your MacBook or MacBook Pro without the Sony vgp-bps8 battery installed? Most people don’t, but some notebook users pop them out when their systems are running on AC with hopes of extending the life of their vgp-bps9a/b by a few months.

While I was benchmarking third-party RAM with a dell xps m1330 battery this week, I noticed that the computer was taking a huge hit in performance when it wasn’t running on Apple-supplied memory. A minor decrease in performance might be unlikely, but a 37 percent plunge in processing power seemed impossible. After some backtracking, I realized that I had been running the benchmarks without the battery installed after I’d swapped out the stock RAM for third-party memory. The MacBook Pro dell xps m1530 was running off AC power for both tests, but the battery was installed only while I was running the benchmark with 4 Gbytes of stock RAM.T60p

After some digging, I found that the performance drop is documented on Apple’s support Web site–though honestly,bps10 Apple’s reason for forcing a drop in processor speed doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Apple justifies the speed reduction by explaining that it “prevents the computer from shutting down if it demands more power than the A/C adapter alone can provide.” But what happens when a battery is no longer able to hold a charge? Does the processor speed drop in that case as well?vgp-bps9/b

We benchmarked our 2.53-GHz MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM using Cinebench R10’s multiprocessor test,vgp-bps9 and achieved a score of 5,549 with the battery present and 3,504 with the battery removed.

Lesson learned: The battery stays in. If you’re a MacBook or MacBook Pro owner,IBM laptop battery you’ll get the best performance out of your system when you leave the battery in. A small extension of your Dell laptop battery’s life span is not worth a 37 percent drop in performance.batteries

If you’re operating a MacBook or MacBook Pro system with a dead battery,hp laptop battery I invite you to benchmark your own system: Try testing your notebook with and without the dead Pavilion DV8000 battery installed.dell inspiron 1525 battery You can use a free download of Cinebench R10 to benchmark your Apple system.
